Aaron Columbus Burr was born on October 26, 1756 in Newark, New Jersey. He was an American politician, lawyer, and military officer who served as the third Vice President of the United States under President Thomas Jefferson from 1801 to 1805.
Burr is perhaps best known for killing Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804. This event effectively ended Burr's political career and led to him being charged with treason in 1807 for allegedly plotting to establish an independent nation in the western United States. Burr was acquitted of the charges, but his reputation was permanently tarnished.
Despite his controversial legacy, Burr was a skilled lawyer and politician who played a significant role in early American history. He was a key figure in the development of New York City and was also instrumental in the establishment of the Manhattan Company, which later became Chase Manhattan Bank.
Burr died on September 14, 1836 in Staten Island, New York at the age of 80. He remains a fascinating and polarizing figure in American history.
